Mommy's Reading Break

I'll read almost anything if it sounds good, but I tend to read mostly YA, and a lot of those are paranormal or dystopian. I have started to branch out into more contemporary lately.

Currently reading

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Jim Dale, J.K. Rowling
Eat, Brains, Love
Jeff Hart
Beautiful Creatures (Caster Chronicles, #1)
Kami Garcia, Margaret Stohl, Kevin Collins
The Eternity Cure - Julie Kagawa This review is also posted on my blog, Mommy's Reading BreakI received this book for review from the publisher via Netgalley.I’ll admit that it took me a little longer to get into The Eternity Cure than it probably should have. I think it would have been better if I had gone straight into The Eternity Cure after reading The Immortal Rules, but I took a break to read a couple other books, and I was suffering from a severe book hangover when I started it, so it took me a bit to get into it.What I think helped a lot, though, is that it’s the second book in a series, so I already was familiar with everything. I have such a hard time getting through all the character introductions and world building that is necessary in a series premiere (or standalone), so I was really happy to not have to go through that again. When we left Allison at the end of The Immortal Rules, she had just left Zeke and her other human friends in Eden and went in search of Kanin. I have seen a lot of positive ratings for The Eternity Cure, but after reading some other books with people seeking others, I was a little skeptical. I was afraid it would be long, drawn out, and boring, but it wasn’t.The action picked up very quickly in The Eternity Cure and ebbed and flowed in a really great way. I thought the pacing was great. There were several high-intensity scenes, interspersed with some romance and exposition. There were a lot of surprises and things I didn’t see coming. One thing that I really loved was that a lot of the characters from The Immortal Rules were brought back into The Eternity Cure, but in really unexpected ways. I never knew who Allie was going to find in any situation, or how it would turn out. I thought it was really clever. The last 30% of the book was definitely the best. The stakes were higher, the pace was faster, and I was actually feverishly flipping through the pages. It was really intense, and full of surprises. I thought it was great, and it really allowed Allie to show off her bad ass-ness. However, it was also fairly realistic, well, for a paranormal. I hate when things come together way too easily, or when the main character suddenly pulls something completely out-of-character off. Julie Kagawa definitely didn’t wrap things up with a perfect little bow, and I thought that was really good. The ending really surprised me in an intense way. I thought it was really good and executed well, but it also had me ready to throw my book. This is two books in a row that have left me with a huge cliffhanger and dying for the next book.Overall, I thought that The Eternity Cure was really good. It took a little bit for me to get into, but when I did, I was completely hooked, and I am dying for the next book. It comes out tomorrow, and I would highly recommend it!
